5 Super Mario Power-Ups & What They Do

The Classic Mario Power-Ups

From the Super Mushroom to the Super Leaf, you're probably more than familiar with the different suits and powers Mario can gain if you're a seasoned player. But if you need a quick refresher or are just curious what each of them does, we've got you covered. Here are five Mario power-ups and the cool abilities they give you.

1. Super Mushroom

The classic power-up in the Mario franchise, the Super Mushroom is depicted as a red mushroom with white dots and allows Mario to grow in size, going from Small to Super. It also gives Mario the ability to break Brick Blocks or take a hit from enemies without losing a life (though he will then revert to Small Mario).

2. Fire Flower

The Fire Flower power-up is another iconic item in the Mario world. Depicted with round "petals" of red and yellow with a green stem, this power-up allows Mario to throw fireballs at enemies, melt Ice Blocks, and light up dark areas in the game.

3. 1-Up Mushroom

The 1-Up Mushroom gives Mario an extra life. It's similar in appearance to the Super Mushroom, only that it's green with white dots. They're often hidden in obscure or risky places, which makes them rare to find and hard to obtain.

4. Mini Mushroom

The Mini Mushroom power-up transforms Mario into a teeny version, allowing him to slip into areas that can only be reached through a small entry. This power-up has the opposite effect of the Mega Mushroom, which gives Mario the ability to stomp through the landscape and destroy any enemy or obstacle in his path.

5. Super Leaf

The Super Leaf power-up transforms Mario into Racoon or Tanooki form, depending on the game. In these forms, Mario can glide, tail whip (to destroy enemies or obstacles), and briefly fly. It's most useful when players need to jump onto platforms that are hard to reach or are constantly moving.
